Many trends have come and gone but LaPerms, much like their namesake hairdo, still remain a favourite! While these curly-coated cats remain quite rare, those who have indulged can’t get enough of this breed’s soft, springy fur.
It all started in 1982 when Linda and Richard Koehl moved to a cherry farm in The Dalles, Oregon. They had invested in some farm cats to keep mice away from their fruit. One of them gave birth to a litter of kittens, which included a bald skinny one with tabby markings on her skin. As she grew, she developed a lovely soft curly coat. After a chance encounter with one of the farm’s toms, she gave birth to five kittens, all with the same appearance as their mother had at birth.
When it was realized they were some kind of Rex, a breeding programme was developed and the rest, as they say, is history.
